Welding:

The use of welding instead of riveting as a means of joining together parts of a steel structure has many advantages, if certain precautions are taken, and some dangers if the precautions are lacking, one of the advantages is the saving of a considerable amount of steel which is beneficial not only to the user of welding but to all who are in need of steel and are suffering from shortage of steel for their structures. Use of welding is therefore of both national and international importance. From this point of view, it is necessary for all users of steel to have knowledge of efficient methods of welding and the precautions to be taken to avoid the dangers. For the spread of this knowledge several Institutions of welding have been established in various countries. Among these, we have in India a Branch of the Institute of Welding (London) whose offices share the same premises as our association and one of their members, Shri B. Majumdar, B.Sc, A.M.I.C.E. (Lond.), A.M.I.E. (Ind.) has kindly presented us with a paper on "Welding Bridge Construction" which we take pleasure in publishing in this issue.
