Experimental stress analysis has been considered for quite a while as a separate professional part of engineering, the purpose of which is the determination of stresses from measurements of strains. Another attitude is to consider the trend in the Engineering Mechanics as taught in the United States and to note the topics presented. Many schools are now granting a Master of Science in Engineering Mechanics. In such a manner one may note the relationship of experimental stress analysis to the other topics in Applied Mechanics. In preparing the following introductory outline it is envisaged that Engineering Mechanics is the liasion engineering study between metallurgy and machine design.
