Economics of Shipping & Shipbuilding:A Talk

The subject I have chosen for my talk may appear from its title to be a sordid one, not suited for delivery to a Technical society unconcerned with financial affairs. But it is really the outcome of a previous paper, read by me before this Association in 1941*, and is presented in answer to a request during the discussion on that paper for particulars of costs and running costs of ships. Both, initial as well as running expenses of ships are affected by the efficiency of Shipping business and of the Shipbuilding industry. Their efficiency in turn is affected by their economics. For this reason I have adopted the term, ECONOMICS, rather than the term, EFFICIENCY which is of more common use among Engineers.
