The history of Farm mechanisation in U.S A. and Japan is revealing. In 1870 U.S.A. had 70 per cent of its population in farming, and horses were the main power for tilling the land In 1970, U.S.A. had only 5% of its population in farming and the land was tilled with 10 million tractors replacing the horses almost completely. West Bengal cannot be an exception. Of course, the system of mechanisation has to be evolved to suit the conditions in our country.
