The demand for steel is ever-increasing and the rate of rise for its demand is also accelerating due to rapid industrialization and extensive housing projects throughout the country. As against the demand of 6,900,000 tonnes of rolled mild steel during 1965-66, the expected demand during 1970-71 for the rolled mild steel is 13,600,000 tonnes. Figures, for ‘bars and rods’ for 1965-66 and 1970-71 are 14,00,000 and 30,00,000 tonnes respectively. The last figure seems to be on conservative side as these were estimated during 1966. However, they indicate that the demand for steel has increased by about 97% and demand for bars forms more than 20% of the total mild steel demand.
