Over the past several decades, diabetes mellitus, has become a major health problem worldwide, reaching epidemic proportions in many developing countries. The global prevalence of diabetes is estimated to increase fi-om 4% in 1995 to 5.4% by the year 2025. The countries with the largest number of diabetics are, and will be in the year 2025, India, China and United States.
