Painted Storks and Pelicans Scenario at Kokkarebellur and Ranganathittu, Karnataka
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Kokkarebellur is a well known community reserve of Madur taluk, while Ranganathittu is a famous bird sanctuary near Srirangapatna town. Both are in Mandya district of Kanataka State. They are well known to offer suitable habitats for both Painted Stork (Ibis leucocephalus) and Spotbilled Pelican (Pelecanus philippinensis) along with other water birds and animals. Both these two sites are so far serving as nesting sites for resident and migratory birds, especially Painted Storks and Spotbilled Pelicans, due to tall tamarind trees, tanks, rivers and extensive agricultural fields in and around. These two species are classified as “near threatened category’ according to IUCN Red List of 2009. This village so far served as one of 21 breeding sites located in India (Kokkarebellur, 2009. Kokkrebellur-the Haven for Spot-billed Pelicans; Retrieved 2009-09-30), and also this bird sanctuary (Wikipedia, 2019. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RanganathittuBird Sanctuary; Retrieved 2019-01-14).
