A total of 140 species of brachyuran crabs belonging to 88 genera and 32 families from marine, estuarine and freshwater habitats of Karnataka state have been dealt with in this communication. Out of 140 species 44 were collected from 24 study sites. Five species have been recorded for the first time from the state. The portunid crab, Charybdis (Charybdis) vareigata is a first-time record from the west coast of India. Among the marine and estuarine forms, 101 are Indo-Pacific in distribution, while 21 species occur in Indian Ocean and 2 in Arabian Sea, and rest three are cosmopolitan. Only two species, namely, Cryptopodia echinosa and Odhneria echinus are endemic to the state. This is the first consolidated and classified list of brachyuran crabs from the state of Karnataka.
