Being a prevalently arid state Rajasthan has a less diverse freshwater fauna including leeches. Till 2015 not more than 10 species were known from this state. Four survey trips by teams of Zoological Survey of India during 2016 and 2017 in places of Rajasthan could collect about 571 leech specimens. Taxonomic study of this collection has resulted in recording of 12 species; including two newly described species by one author (Mandal, and other associates) in 2018. Currently, 19 species are found from the state that includes 7 species yet unrecorded.
