Heavy metals often pollute environment when these are released into it both by natural and anthropogenic source. Some of these metals have bio-importance as trace elements. But toxic effects of many of them on humans are of great concern. Human beings usually come in contact with heavy metals in agricultural, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, industrial and residential settings. Those metals become toxic when they are not metabolised by the body and accumulate in soft tissues, causing various diseases. In this context, toxic effects on some heavy metals, viz., cadmium, lead and mercury have been discussed in the present paper, based on secondary data. The chemistry and treatments of toxicity are also highlighted.
