Cellular Permineralised Wood from the Raniganj Coalfield, West Bengal, India
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Cordaites wood collected from an abandoned mine pit near Samla colliery in the Raniganj Coalfield is permineralised by siderite and marcasite. The in situ upright stem contains kaolinite in the core. The fossil wood is identified as a new species of Cordaites-Mesoxylon samlaensis Madabhushi, 1987. While the Artisia (pith) is kaolinized, the Amyelon (ischolar_main) is turned into coal. The paragenesis of cellular permineralisation inferred is: sideritisation-marcasitisation-feldspathisation-coalification-limonitisation-kaolinisation.
