Criteria to idenify the variously affected zones of a coal seam intruded by igneous bodies of variable composition and configuration is a matter of investigation long since Changes in physical, chemical, optical and structural behavior of coal indicate an increase in rank toward the coal-intrusive contact. In present study a comparison of the above parameters reveals a distinct difference in the behavioral pattern with changing distances from the contact beyond which normal charactenstics of coal seam is retained. The identification of zones of variable rank with distance from coal-lntrusive contact may act as a guide during mining and proper utilization sector for coal.
