The death of Dr. S. S. Pillai (Subbayya Pillai Sivasankaranarayana Pillai) in the crash of the aircraft, Star of Maryland, near Cairo on August 31, 1950 removes from our midst one of our best mathematicians. Pillai was on his way to the United States when the accident occurred.
