Convolutions of functions of two variables were introduced by Volterra as a means of solving certain types of integral equations. The method which he and his followers used to obtain representations of convolutions of arbitrary order is formalistic, and hardly practical, except for kernels of the type h(x-t), the so-called "closed cycle".

Abstract

Convolutions of functions of two variables were introduced by Volterra as a means of solving certain types of integral equations. The method which he and his followers used to obtain representations of convolutions of arbitrary order is formalistic, and hardly practical, except for kernels of the type h(x-t), the so-called "closed cycle".
