One fact which stands out prominently in the life of Heaviside is that he was very hard on Cambridge mathematicians and their school. That was because his methods of attacking physical problems were not orthodox, lacked rigoui, and as such were not well-received by the Cambridge school. This circumstance perhaps explains why they did not " catch on." But there is no doubt that his methods are extremely short, involve less labour, ' work' successfully, and it is not impossible to establish them quite as rigorously.

Abstract

One fact which stands out prominently in the life of Heaviside is that he was very hard on Cambridge mathematicians and their school. That was because his methods of attacking physical problems were not orthodox, lacked rigoui, and as such were not well-received by the Cambridge school. This circumstance perhaps explains why they did not " catch on." But there is no doubt that his methods are extremely short, involve less labour, ' work' successfully, and it is not impossible to establish them quite as rigorously.
