If the position of a variable point P on a line is to be determined by a distance from a single point A, the line is given a direction and the distance is given a sign in order that P may be distinguished from the point which is its image in A. To avert the possibility of confusing the two points without introducing direction along the line, we introduce a second base point B.

Abstract

If the position of a variable point P on a line is to be determined by a distance from a single point A, the line is given a direction and the distance is given a sign in order that P may be distinguished from the point which is its image in A. To avert the possibility of confusing the two points without introducing direction along the line, we introduce a second base point B.
