This committee was appointed by a Resolution of the Government of India dated January 20, 1944, for the purpose of formulating a Code of Hindu Law which should be complete as far as possible. As set out in the Resolution, the action taken by the Government was in accordance with the opinion expressed in the Report of the Joint Select Committee on the Hindu Intestate Succession Bill and a specific recommendation to the same effect made by the Council of State.
