Interaction Disulphine Blue with Detergents in Aqueous Medium

Addition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide to an acid solution of disulphine blue dye results in the development of the base colour of the dye. The effect is discernible even when CTAB as low as 7.50 × 10-5(M) interacts with the dye at 2.10 × 10-5(M) in 0.5 M HCl solution. The spectrum of the dye in neutral or basic solution is hardly affected by the quaternary salts. In the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate the expected development of the acid form of the dye does not occur. The spectral features of the dye in micellar media have been interpreted in the light of surface pH concept and an exhange type equilibrium.
