Bionics as an Inspiration for Machine Tool Structure-A Review

The escalation of manufacturing industries relies on the development of the machine tool industries. Development of newer materials demands higher capabilities for machine tools. Hence, the mechanical design of the machine tool must be improved. Design based on bionics is the one of the best and it is the most successful way to improve the machine tool structures. Bionics is the study of nature where the designers solve human problems by imaging the structure of nature. For many years, designers from all fields have always looked to nature as a source of inspiration for design and source of innovation. Most of the engineers are looking the nature as problem solver, as the nature has the biggest experience in finding solutions for the environment than anything else. The design of the machine tool structures are also taken from the nature as a source because it provides solutions efficiently and economically. This paper presents an overview of bionic structures used in machine tools. Also, the bionic structures are more successful in the fields like automobiles, aircrafts etc.
