There is no formal definition of nanotechnology, but in simple terms it is the understanding of the processing, properties and applications of materials or devices that are on the 'nano-scale' in at least one dimension. That generally means distances of less than l00nm. Since, atoms are typically separated by about 0.3 of a nanometer, this means arrangements of atoms of molecules that there are, typically, a few hundred atoms or less.
