Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is one of the formal techniques for effective product development. Its main purpose is to avoid as many potential failures as possible by identifying them and taking appropriate actions in early stages of design and development. This paper describes a FMEA methodology carried out at Rane (Madras) Ltd. In Mysore to Identify failures and avoid major breakdown. The project pertains to the work done for some specific customers of the company such as TELCO (Main nut, Worm, Box, Sector shaft), MF (Main nut. Worm, Box, Rocker shaft), and also Heat treatment process for ail Main nuts and Worms and Painting process for all steering gears. The result of this technique provides risk analysis for comparison of single component failures and also to avoid common cause failures.
