Biotechnology is the technology of harnessing the natural biological processes of microbes, plants and animal cells, for the benefit of mankind. Man has been using biotechnology for centuries for processing foods like bread, beer and cheese. However, the techniques of modern molecular biology, in particular genetic engineering, which involves direct manipulation of genetic material, have opened up important new possibilities in the field of biotechnology.
