Bilayer Tablets-A Review of State of Art

Bilayer tablets provide one of the important design approaches where incompatible drugs, with different indication, and same drug with different release rate (e.g. IR and ER) can be incorporated in a single unit, or two incompatible drugs are needed to be provided in single dosage form. Bilayer tablets have several advantages over conventional tablets and few other dosage forms. The formulation and manufacturing of bilayer tablets face many challenges in terms of hardness, delamination, layer thickness and so on. This review highlights the material attributes, formulation design, process parameters that impact the performance, and manufacturability of the multilayer tablets.
