Hyperpigmentation is usually associated with enhance secretion of melanin pigment which is also related to the free radical stimulation in the various layers of the skin. P. granatum flowers rich in polyphenols which are known free radical scavengers. The aim of the present study was evaluate the antioxidant activities and tyrosinase inhibitory effects on flowers of Punica granatum methanoloic extract. The antioxidant activity was performed by various assays i.e. free radical scavenging activity by 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method, Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity by deoxyribose method and Lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity using rat liver homogenate. The methanolic extract of P. granatum has exhibited good antioxidant activity when compared with standard Quercetin. The extract has also demonstrated good tyrosinase inhibitory activity in in-vitro using mushroom tyrosinase. The study has demonstrated positive contribution of extract of P. granatum for reducing hyperpigmentation by virtue of its free radical scavenging potential and tyrosinase enzyme inhibitory activity.
