Gastroprotective Activity of Avipathi Choornam

Ayurveda is the one of the most noted system of medicine in the world. The term Ayurveda in Sanskrit consist of two words: Ayur meaning life and Veda meaning science, thus Ayurveda is the science of life. Avipathi Choornam is an ayurvedic medicine and contains rhizomes of Zingiber officinale; fruits of Piper Nigrum, Piper longum, Embelia ribes, Emblica officinalis, seeds of Elettaria cardamomum and leaves of Cinnamomum zeyalanicum and it are useful for the treatment of peptic ulcer. Peptic ulcer is a break in the lining of the stomach or duodenum. The gastroprotective activity of Avipathi Choornam was performed by the screening of antiulcer activity by ethanol induced gastric ulcer and screening of gastroprotective effect by Pylorus ligation method. The toxicity study shows the safety nature of Avipathi Choornam and the results obtained shows that it is a good and safe therapeutic agent for ulcer treatment.
