Therapeutic Efficacy of Third Generation Cephalosporin, Against Ampicillin and Chloramphenicol Resistant Haemophilus Influenzae

Haemophilus Influenzae type b is an important cause of meningitis in child below two years of age. In many causes treatment is empiric and there is a lack of understanding of resistant issues with this bacterium. This study was aimed to determine the therapeutic efficacy of ceftriaxone and ceftazidime in comparison to chloramphenicol and ampicillin. The mean bacterial colony counts in cerebrospinal fluid were unchanged or slightly increased with ampicillin or chloramphenicol while the mean bacterial colony counts in CSF were reduced by 92% (-3.37 log10 CFU/ml) on 92% (-4.30log 10 CFU/ml) after a single dose of ceftazidime and ceftriaxone.
