Astigmatism after Conventional Cataract Surgery with IOL Implantation

Objective: To assess the post- operative astigmatism after conventional cataract surgery with IOL implantation.

Samples size: Fifty patient of both sexes and all age groups. Senile immature cataract (no cases with other complications were included in the study as sample.

Statistical Analysis: Data analyzed, tabulated and inferences were drawn with the help of various statistical techniques.

Findings: Post operative astigmatism with rule, against rule and no astigmatism on 3^rd post operative day was 76, 06 and 18 percent respectively. While on 7^th postoperative day it was 82, 14 and 04 percent, similarly on 2^nd week it was 82, 14 and 04 percent. At 4^th week it has changes to 76, 14 and 10 percent which further changed on 6^th week and recoded 40, 54 and 06 percent. On 8^th week it was 41,16 and 02 percent where on 12^th week it was 58, 34 and 08 percent.

Conclusion: The general belief that cataract has to be ripe before its removal has to be changed because cataract surgery has become predictable safe and able to provide optimum satisfaction through both intraocular lens implantation and more consideration of the refractive outcome. With current cataract surgical techniques that add a measured refractive surgical component, early intervention is logical not only to prevent visual disability, but also to enhance uncorrected visual acuity.
