Research can be defined as the search for knowledge, or as any systematic investigation, to establish novel facts, solve new or existing problems, prove new ideas, or develop new theories, usually using a scientific method. The primary purpose for basic research is discovering, interpreting, and the development of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge. Research enriches the human civilization and creates confidence in the individual. It creates joyful atmosphere in learning, and improves the quality of education. Research will help to understand any subject and its principles in much better and easier way. The purpose of research is to inform action. It seeks to contextualize its findings within the larger body of research. Research must always be high quality in order to produce knowledge that is applicable outside of the research setting with implications that go beyond the group that has participated in the research. The key to a successful research project lies in iteration: the process of returning again and again to the research questions, methods, and data, which leads to new ideas, revisions and improvements. Research at higher education level holds its own importance at that level as it will open the door for a bright future. This paper gives a brief idea on various avenues of research and the impact of research in innovation. It analyses how far research culture exists in different colleges across Mumbai and its impact on the professors and students community.
