Manufacturing industries are facing difficulties from newly developed, advanced materials viz. composites, ceramics and super alloys, which fall under the category of difficult-to-machine materials. To overcome these challenges, non-conventional machining processes are being employed which give better material removal rate, accuracy and surface finish. Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is the process in which electrically conductive materials are machined irrespective of their hardness using controlled sparks in the presence of dielectric. Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites (AMMC's) are new generation engineering materials that possess superior physical and mechanical properties compared to non-reinforced alloys. This paper presents a review of research work done on Al-SiC metal matrix composite on EDM, Wire EDM, Powder Mixed EDM, EDM in Water, Micro EDM. The paper also discusses the future scope of work in the same area.
