Ultrasonic Pulse Propagation in a Linear Dispersive Medium
Ultrasonic wave propagation in a linear dispersive medium has been studied numerically. Analytical expression for the particle displacement at a position x at a time t inside a medium bounded by two parallel planes at x=0 and x=1 due to ultrasonic pulse propagation along x-direction has been derived. Numerical evaluation of the analytical expression for the response shows the nature of distortion of the pulse caused by dispersion. It has been suggested that even if the pulse gets distorted, the ultrasonic propagation parameters can be determined from the Fourier spectrum of the responses observed at different positions in the medium by the method of computational analysis, provided the medium is linear.
