Achievement Motivation and Academic Achievement:A Correlated Study

The present study was designed to assess and compare the achievement motivation level and academic achievement of boys and girls students of the Senior Secondary schools situated in different rural and urban areas of Rohtak district and also to find out the correlation between achievement motivation and academic achievement level of the Senior Secondary School students of 10+2 class. A 2×2 factorial design was adopted for the present study. The study was conducted over a sample of 200 (100 boys and 100 girls) students of the age group of 16-18 years of Senior Secondary schools studying in 10+2 class in different schools of Rohtak district. Out of them 100 students (50 boys and 50 girls) were selected from the schools situated in different rural areas and other 100 students (50 boys and 50 girls) were selected from the Senior Secondary schools situated in different urban areas on random basis. Achievement Motivation Scale designed by Pratibha Deo and Asha Mohan (1985) was used to measure achievement motivation. The aggregate marks obtained in the examination were taken as their level of academic achievement. It was hypothesized that there will be significant difference between the achievement motivation and academic achievement level of the students on the basis of sex and background of the school. It was also hypothesized that there will be a significant positive correlation between achievement motivation and academic achievement level of the students. The obtained data was analyzed by employing mean, S.D., t-test and Pearson's 'r'. No significant difference was found on achievement motivation level of the students on the basis of sex and background of the schools. A significant positive correlation was found between achievement motivation and academic achievement level of the students.
