Development and Standardization of Striving Potential Inventory:A Measure of Goal Directed Behavior (SPI-GDB)
Subscribe/Renew Journal
This study is an attempt to develop and standardize a psychological tool that could possibly measure individual's capacity to exercise striving potential in all situations: an attitude that could enhance individual's self-understanding. Conceptually structured around the person-situation integration, Striving is split into five (5) dimensions: Self-Acceptance; Goal-Essence; Intention-Acting; Significant-Nurture; and Hope-Inclination. From an initial item formulation of seventy-five (75) items, fifteen (15) for each of the dimensions; the tool finally is a fifty-seven (57) item tool. The items were rated on a five (5) rating scale as follows: 1= does not fit at all; 2= fits slightly; 3= fits moderately; 4=fits strongly; 5=fits quite exactly. Participants in this study were 915 Seminarians from some seminaries within Metro Manila, Philippines (n = 20 for dry run; n = 395 for first tryout; n = 250 for the second tryout; and n = 250 for validity tests). Reliabilities and construct (convergence and divergence) validity were based on relevant statistical procedures. Results indicated a high inter-item and inter-component internal reliabilities (r = .92) across two measurement procedures. Also, the study showed a significant high positive level of construct validity. Areas for future study and validation were discussed.
