Like Aristophane's "Peace and Lysistra", Mother Courage and her children is an anti-war play. It is an excruciating tragedy. Aristotle defines tragedy as, incorporating,-
"incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish the catharsis of such emotions."
