It represents one of the critical transitions in the life span of a human being and is characterized by a tremendous pace in growth and change that is second only to that of infancy. The process of adolescence is a period of preparation for adulthood. The world has 1.2 billion individuals in the age group of 10-19 years. Adolescents aged between 10 to 19 years account for more than one-fifth of the world’s population. South Asia is home to nearly 340 million adolescents. In India, this age group covers 241 million (21.4%) of the total population.
