Quality of Life among Adolescents Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Objective(s):The study aims to assess the quality of life for adolescent patients with irritable bowel syndrome in the city of Baghdad and determine the relationship between adolescents` quality of life level and their demographic characteristics.

Methodology:A descriptive study,using the assessment approach was conducted on a purposive “non-probability” sample of (100) patients from both gender aged (12-18) years, attending liver and digestive system diseases teaching hospital in Baghdad city. The instrument of the study was adapted from the World Health Organization quality of life questionnaire(1998) to achieve the purpose of the study, in addition to the participants’ demographic characteristics and the some related medical data. The data were collected through direct interview,during the period of the 1^st of July to the 16^th of August 2018. SPSS program was used in data analysis.

Results:The findings of the study indicated that adolescents` social domain was affected, the finding also showed significant relationships among adolescents` age, gender, marital status, employment status and their quality of life. Conclusion:Irritable bowel syndrome IBS affected on adolescents quality of life negatively, especially social, psychological, and environmental domains..

Recommendations:The study recommended the need to avoid disease risk factors and additional studies are required to interpret the results of the difference in the quality of life of adolescent patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
