Yoga versus Physiotherapy: Effect on Pulmonary function, Breath Holding Time & Quality of Life in Asthmatics
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Aim: To compare effect of yoga versus physiotherapy on Pulmonary function , Breath holding time and quality of life in asthmatics.
Subjects and method: Randomized experimental study with two parallel groups was designed to compare the effect of yoga & physiotherapy on Pulmonary Function (PFT) , Quality of Life (QOL) and Breath holding time (BHT) in patients with Asthma . Patients diagnosed with Asthma from a tertiary care hospital, Mumbai were included . Subjects were excluded if in acute exacerbation of asthma or associated with any other lung or cardiac disease, were pregnant or were treated with steroids in the past three months, who practiced yoga or any other form of exercise. Selected patients were randomly divided by BINGO method into two groups - Group A & Group B. Group A received yoga and Group B received physiotherapy. Educational programs for asthma management were conducted for both the groups. Total duration of intervention was seven weeks. PFT , QOL and BHT were measured pre and post intervention.
Result & Statistical Analysis: Student's paired t test was used to examine data within groups while repeated measure ANOVA (RMANOVA) was used with Bonfferoni adjustment to compare the parameters between Yoga and Physiotherapy. Both Yoga & Physiotherapy showed statistically significant improvement in all components of SGRQ .Yoga group showed statistically significant improvement in Breath holding time and all components of PFT except Forced Vital Capacity(FVC) . Physiotherapy group showed statistically significant improvement in all parameters of PFT except FVC and mid expiratory flow rates.
Conclusions: Yoga along with physiotherapy would be more beneficial for asthmatics.
