Dyspnea on Exertion in Obese Women in Age Group of 18 - 25 years in Nagpur

Background: Obesity is a risk factor of many diseases and, this is one of the leading problems in Indian women because of sedentary life style and faulty eating habits. Obesity is abnormal growth of the adipose tissues due to enlargement of fat cell size or an increase in fat cell number or a combination of both. Obesity is caused by increased intake of energy dense foods that are high in fats, salts and sugar but low in vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients. Obese individuals tend to get exhausted on minimal activity so the study was under taken to know dyspnea on exertion in obese women.
Aim: "To investigate whether dyspnea is present in obese individuals." "To investigate whether dyspnea is increased on exercise training in obese women.'
Materials & Method: Experimental case control study on 3 different groups was carried out by exercising on static cycle&were compared for PFT values&Borg's scale
Result: FVC values, FEV1 values, Borg's scale (rate of perceived exertion) was analyzed in all three groups. The values were less for obese followed by overweight followed by normal for all parameters. The FEV1 (p<0.001), FVC (p<0.001), Borg's scale (p<0.0001) values were statistically significant when normal and obese were compared.
Conclusion: Healthy obese women have reduced lung function (FEV1 and FVC)&increased rate of perceived exertion. This may point towards deconditioning effect of the lungs. Such individuals can also be a part of pulmonary rehabilitation program.
