Aim

To compare the effect of Cyriax Versus Mulligan’s approach in the treatment of patients with lateral epicondylitis.

Setting

Physiotherapy OPD at General & Superspeciality Hospitals, Pune (M.H.).

Design

‘Pre-test, Post-test experimental group design’.

Subjects

Thirty one (11 Male, 20 Female) patients with Mean age of = 40.35 (range 21 – 50yrs) participated in the study.

Method

Taking the inclusion criteria’s into consideration and prior Consent, patients having Lateral Epicondylitis were allocated into 2 GROUPS. GROUP 1: received CYRIAX intervention i.e. Deep Transverse Friction Massage, followed by Mill’s Manipulation, whereas GROUP 2: received MULLIGAN’S mobilization with movement. Both the groups received Hydrocollator packs (for 10mins) and were given common exercise programme and tennis elbow bracing. Outcome measures contemplated were VAS, number of treatment sessions (till pain on VAS became 0 or 1), Pain Free Grip Strength and DASH Scale (Disability of arm shoulder and hand questionnaire) for functional evaluation.

Result

Group 1 (Cyriax approach) and Group 2 (Mulligan’s approach) both showed statistically significant improvement in Pain free grip strength (p0.05) for Pain free grip strength and number of treatment sessions. For DASH (Disability of Arm Shoulder and Hand) Questionnaire scores significant difference was found between the groups (p<0.05) but also there was a significant pre-treatment baseline difference.

Conclusion

Cyriax and Mulligan’s approach both are equally good in treatment of Patients with Lateral Epicondylitis, and thus can be judiciously used in daily clinical practice, though group 2 i.e. Mulligan’s group has shown superior result functionally.
