Rehabilitation Following the Implantation of Mobilitytm-type Ankle Prosthesis
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Background: Latest developments and changed indications in prosthetics of ankle joint arthrosis require adjusted physiotherapeutic follow-up treatment guidelines. So far there exist neither physiotherapeutic guidelines nor outcomes after postoperative rehabilitation. Objective: The aim of this case study was to illustrate rehabilitation guidelines after the implantation of an ankle joint prosthesis by means of a clinical approved 4-phases rehabilitation programme.
Methods: A 59 year-old male went through a 4-phase rehabilitation programme with appropriate individual adjustments regarding therapeutic measures. The clinical and functional outcomes were monitored postoperatively up to 1 year.
Results: At the end of the third postoperative month the patient was almost analgised (VAS: 1 / 10), had reached intra-operative mobility (PF/DE: 30 / 0 / 10), and could follow all his every day activities. As to sports, he could ski (6th month) and play golf (10th month) again. During rehabilitation there occurred no complications. Neuromuscular control of the foot and the leg axis improved up to 1 year post-operative.
Conclusion: In this case study a 4-phase rehabilitation programme encouraged the achievement of symptom-free everyday and leisure activities. Clinical studies confirmed the result but the scientific effectiveness of the programme needs further research.
