An Analytical Study of the Solid and Hazardous Waste Management in Paper/Paperboard Packaging Industry

Waste management is important nowadays because of increasing population which increases demand leading to the increase in number of industries which in turn increases industrial waste. As population continues to grow, we need to identify better ways of managing the byproducts of our lifestyles to cope up with the changing environment. Increasing landfill costs in the not too distant futures could have a significant impact on printing packaging businesses that cannot avoid, reduce, reuse, or recycle their waste. Moreover world is facing a great threat of global warming and climate change and if necessary steps to control the pollution and waste are not undertaken today, the day is not far when we will have to face the calamities caused by over mother. The waste come from a variety of activities-such as plate making, image processing, printing and finishing-and differs according to the type of printing processes used. To reduce wastes, packaging businesses will need to focus on waste management rather than waste disposal. This paper illustrates and explains the techniques used for the waste management in the printing and packaging industry. This will require a shift in attitudes and practices with an emphasis on preventing and reducing rather than on treating and disposing of wastes. Whatever the nature and characteristics of the waste may be, it all has one thing in common: all waste represent loss of resources and money. So, waste management not only controls pollution but also prevents printers from facing fines, lawsuits along with saving money. Thus right management at right time is call of the hour.
