Abstract

Gregarious flowering in bamboo is a very rare natural phenomenon. The average time span between two such flowerings in Bambusa arundinacea is 50 years. But the data on this account is very staggered and insufficient. Observations on the gregarious flowering was taken for each forest block for a period of three years from 2006-2009. Based on the field observations, an effort has been made to document and map the gregarious flowering of this species in Khurda Forest Division, Orissa. The bamboo forests of Nayagarh district flowered gregariously, while the bamboo clumps in Berberra forests of Khurda district, did not flower during the period. This variation is in conformity with the earlier gregarious flowering reported in this division.

Abstract

Awareness of the physical location for each node is required by many wireless sensor network applications. The location awareness is required by many sensor network applications, but it is often too expensive to include GPS receiver in a sensor network node. Therefore, Localization schemes make use of the Seed nodes that knows their location and protocols, thereby other nodes estimate their positions from the messages they received from it. The crux part is estimating the location of the mobile nodes and seeds keeping in mind all the constraints of the sensor nodes (energy, network, memory etc.,). Although mobility appears to make localization difficult, we adapt sequential Monte carlo Localization method along with minimum spanning tree concept to prove efficient localization. This approach does not need any extra hardware on the nodes and seeds even when the movement of seeds are uncontrollable.

Abstract

The purpose of localization in Wireless Sensor Network is to establish the position of the nodes at a particular point of time as the nodes are mobile. Locating information is not only used to realize it s position but it can also be used to increase outing capabilities and load balancing of network. This paper proposes the combination of clock algorithm and rectangle truncation (RT) localization algorithm for locating objects even in a fading-signal sensor environment. The paper further presents a location verification mechanism to increase the accuracy and consistency of the estimated object location. It can be classified as low power algorithm as it does not need any special hardware and the computations are minimized.

Abstract

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is marked by the sudden death of an infant during sleep that is not predicted by the medical history and remains unexplained even after thorough forensic autopsy and detailed death investigation. In this we developed a system that provides solutions for the above problems by making the crib smart using the wireless sensor networks (WSN) and smart phones. The system provides visual monitoring service through live video, alert services by crib fencing and awakens alert, monitoring services by temperature reading and light intensity reading, vaccine reminder and weight monitoring.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to examine the performance of gelatin based edible coating in preserving the seer fish slices. A composite edible coating solution was prepared with three different concentrations of gelatin, chitosan and vinegar. Coating experiments were performed in a laboratory scale edible coating tank which was fabricated for this purpose. The seer fish slices (13.65±2.50 mm thick and 43.89±6.82 g weight) were subjected to coating for three different soaking times (min). While coating performance of the solution was assessed through coating uptake (%), texture quality of the seer fish slices was assessed through weight loss (%) and microbial quality was assessed through Total Plate Count (CFU/g). Experiment was designed using Box-Behnken Design (BBD). The application of edible coating treatment to seer fish slices resulted in improvement of overall keeping quality of the seer fish slices (9 days) against the control (3 days) when stored under low temperature (7±1°C).

Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries is one of the most infectious diseases in the world. Dental sealants have been proved as effective way to prevent caries, hence can play a vital role in preventing caries. Objective: The primary objective of the study is to obtain insight into dental sealant status and factors associated with sealant use among dental professionals in Mangalore, by a questionnaire method. Method: A cross sectional, questionnaire based study was done on both private practitioners and professionals working in various colleges in Mangalore, to assess knowledge, attitude, behaviour, perceived effectiveness, willingness to apply sealants, familiarity with recent guidelines and barriers to the use dental sealants in Mangalore city. Results: A total of 134 respondents took part in study. Half of the respondents (50%) said that they had never applied sealants. A majority (96.3%) of them said that they were willing to apply sealants as a preventive measure. On correlation analysis there was a statistically significant association between knowledge and attitude (p = 0.001, r = 0.296), behaviour (p = 0.001, r = 0.280) and perceived effectiveness (p=0.001, r=272). There was also statistically significant association between attitude and behaviour (p < 0.001, r = 0.433), perceived effectiveness (p < 0.001, r = 0.521) and barriers (p=0.014,r=0.228).Overall 86.6% of the respondents reported that dental sealants are underused with poor attitude of patients towards sealants being the major barrier for their use followed by unawareness of treatment choice in patients. Conclusion: The present study highlights the need to change the dental curriculum regarding dental sealants and has definite policy implications for preventive re orientation of dental education and dental practice for long term oral health benefits to the populace. The results also throw light on a number of barriers to the use dental sealants in a developing nation like India, thus indicates the need for patient education and awareness programs for the population in terms of oral health.
