A new simple, sensitive and precise visible spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of Secnidazole in bulk and in pharmaceutical formulation. This method is based on the reduction of secnidazole, in the presence of 4N Hydrochloric acid and ethanol to form yellow colored chromogen. Which was estimated at an absorption maximum of 477.5 nm. This method has the linearity in the concentration range of 100-500μg/ml. This method is statistically evaluated for efficacy.Keywords

Two simple, rapid, accurate and price spectrophotometric methods have been developed for simultaneous eatimation of cefixime and ofloxacin in bulk and in tablet dosage form. Method A involves simultaneous equations at 290.4 nm ((λmax of Cefixime) and 297.4nm (λmax of Ofloxacin). Method B involves Absorbance ratio method at 282.0 nm (iso-absorptive point) and 297.4 nm (λmax of Ofloxacin) using ethanol as a solvent.The linearity was observed in the concentration range of 5-25 μg/ml for Cefixime and 2-10 μg/ml for Ofloxacin.The results of analysis have been validated statically and by recover studies and were found satisfactory.Keywords

A new simple, sensitive and precise visible spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of ziprasidone in bulk and in pharmaceutical formulations. This method is based on the hydrolysis of Ziprasidone, followed by diazotization and coupling with N-(1-naphthyl) ethylene diamine dihydrochloride to form an azo dye which was estimated at an absorption maximum of 540nm (pink color). This method has the linearity in the concentration range of 2-10 μg/ml. The practice of traditional medicine for the control of fertility in most parts of Ethiopia is based on the uses of plant medicines for many years. The fact that the herbal medicines have been employed for such a long time does not guarantee their efficacy and safety. The aim of the present study was therefore to carry out phytochemical screening, efficacy and safety studies on one of the traditionally used anti- fertility plants: Dodonea viscose Linn. The secondary metabolites of the leaves of this plant were determined. The methanolic extract of the leaves of this plant were investigated for their anti-fertility activity in female rats. The identification of the secondary metabolites showed that the leaves of the plant contained alkaloids, phytosterols and polyphenols. It was found that the extract reduced significantly (p< 0.01) the number of liters and administered through oral route. It also produced ant fertility effect in a dose dependent manner and the contraceptive effect was manifested for a definite period of time. Furthermore, the extract prolonged significantly the anti-implantation and early abortifacient activity. All these observations suggest that the extract has antifertility activity and is safe at the effective anti-fertility doses employed in this study.Keywords

Plants are a valuable source of a multitude of secondary metabolites which have been used as medicine since times. Most unarguable merit of using plants as a source of medicine is that they are low priced and readily available with very minimal side effects. The present study deals with the comparative analysis of dry and fresh aqueous, ethanolic and chloroform extracts of Rosa indica petals for its phytochemical screening. The results confirmed the presence of almost all tested secondary metabolites in aqueous and ethanolic extracts, whereas chloroform extract showed only the presence of saponins. Further study was proceeded only with dry and fresh aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Rosa indica petals for its antimicrobial activity against Gram negative bacteria including Escherichia coli (ATCC NO: 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC NO: 27853) and gram positive bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC NO: 43300), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC NO: 29212) and Candida albicans (ATCC NO: 24433) which is an opportunistic pathogenic yeast. Both dry and fresh ethanolic extracts showed a comparatively higher zone of inhibition for all the microbes. Aqueous dry and fresh extracts showed zone of inhibition for Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis, where as none of the extracts showed antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans. Results from the above study suggest that the ethanolic extract of Rosa indica petal are an encouraging alternative to some of the antibacterial drugs. This in turn would potentially be used as natural source to treat various multi drug resistant bacterial strains.Keywords
