Abstract

For some years now the Branch of Forest Entomology has been engaged in evolving suitable prophylactic methods of treatment of freshly felled timber in Indian forests, as the loss caused in the first few days or weeks of felling and before the logs are transported to the sites of conversion or utilization are very considerable. There is much demand for information regarding prophylactic methods both from forest departments and other government departments including the defence departments, as well as from private concerns. Our approach has been two-fold: first, to devise "natural or silvicultural" methods of storage in forests; secondly, by the use of insecticides. "Natural" methods, by their very nature must vary from one timber species to another, as also with the region, and we have consequently taken up three investigation with 3 or 4 common species in the Madras region, the Bombay region and the Dehra Dun (wet, North India) region. The results of the Madras investigation have already been published (Khan, 1947), those of the Bombay investigations are presented here, while those of the Dehra Dun investigations are under study. One of the authors, the late Dr. N. C. Chatterjee, supervised the investigation in its later stages. The manuscript of the paper has been written by Dr. P. N. Chatterjee and revised by the undersigned; Dr. N. C. Chatterjee unfortunately did not live to see it. Reference is also invited to a note by the undersigned, to be shortly published ( Roonwal, 1951 ), in which are given practical directions on prophylactic treatments both by the natural" methods and by the use of insecticides.

Abstract

The ecology of the cricket Gymnogryllus humeralis Walker ( Orthoptera, Gryllidae ), a minor pest in the seedling stage of Casuarina equsetifolia, as studied in the field in Western Kanara Forest Division, Bombay State, during 1947-49, is described. Casuarina transplants of two feet and above in height were observed to have outgrown the limit of susceptibility to attack by crickets in the experimental localities, i.e., Chittakula (Karwar forest range), Harvada (Ankola forest range) and Kaserkode (Honavar forest range). The cricket is polyphagous and feeds upon various food-plants besides casuarina. They avoid poisoned food and so it was found difficult to poison-bait them in the field. In cages, in the laboratory, however, when no alternative food-plant was supplied they ate poisoned casuarina needles and died. Gymnogryllus humeralis has three generations in Peninsular India. In the insectary at Dehra Dun it passed through one complete and a part of the second generation; in the latter generation, it died in the nymphal stage in the severe winter of North India. Other insect pests of casuarina are also recorded.

Abstract

Comparative prophylactic antitermite efficacy of three insecticides, viz., commerical sample of cashew nut shell liquid, Aldrin and Dieldrin was tested for a period of four years. The result shows that both Aldrin and Dieldrin in 1 % and 2% concentration behave satisfactorily for prophylactic protection of timbers against subterranean wood-destroying termites. But highest preference should be given to Aldrin at 2% concentration. Commercial sample of cashew nut shell liquid gave only little protection in the first and second year.

The sal borer, Hoplocerambyx spinicornis Newm., is endemic in South Mandla Forest Division, Madhya Pradesh. Recently, in June, 1963 serious epidemic was reported by the Chief Conservator of Forests, M.P., to the President, Forest Research Institute to suggest some suitable control measures. An entomological party was sent by the President to get a first hand knowledge of epidemic and conditions prevailing there. An account of party's survey and work on trap-tree operation during 20th-27th June, 1963 along with recommendations for the control of Hoplo are given in this paper.

Natural resistance of three species of Indian woods, namely, 'axle-wood', 'mahua' and 'teak', to Microcerotermes beesoni, a subterranean termite species, has been discussed. Techniques of sampling of wood, culturing of termites and testing of resistance of wood to termites have been given in detail. The heartwood of'mahua' and 'teak' may be classed as very resistant to termites while wood of 'axle-wood' is only moderately resistant to termites.

Raising of Ailanthus in plantations has brought entemological problems in its wake, i.e., epidemics of Eligma narcissus Cramer and Atteva fabriciella Swederus. Distribution of Eligma narcissus follows distribution of genus Ailanthus. Moth large, grey, black and yellow; egg pale white, larva bright sulphur yellow with black and red patches, pupa dark brown. Moth oviposits in clusters, incubation period 3-4 days, larval period 22-23 days and pupal period 15-17 days. There are 8-9 generations a year. Sex ratio is 50:50. Enemy complex, compries of two tachinid parasites, Eutachina civiloides Baranov and Sturmia inconspicuella Baranov; a fungal pathogen, Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin; a mantid predator Humbortilla ceylonica Saussere; and a bird predator the black headed oriole-Oriolus xantheornus. Integrated measures, i.e., Biological-cam-silvicultural and mechanical, advised for the control of the pest in plantations.
