Junipcrus macropoda Seeds ordinarily do not give more than 1 per cent germination, The dormancy is due to after-ripening required: 2 years old seed co1luted in December and stored under ground for 2-3 months has given upto 20 per cent germination, Treated seeds enter Into a secon 1ary dormancy after about 30 days of sowi- A Preliminary Note on Propagation of Bamboos from Culm Segments

This note describes the experimental work on "Air Layering" done at New Forest, Dehra Dun, since 1952. Forty-two common trees species were tried for vegetative propagation by air layers of which 17 were successfully propagated, 8 others were propagated with difficulty and the rest failed to propagate. The details of the method as practised in New Forest are given.- Preliminary Note on Artificial Ripening of the Immature Fruits of Broussonetia papyrifera, Vent. (the Paper Mulberry Tree)

Very little work has been done on the artificial ripening of unripe fruits of forest trees. This note describes the results of treating such fruits of Broussonelia papyrijera with Ethylene gas. Both the germinative capacity and vigour of the seeds improved as a result of the treatment.- Science Notes

With a view to determining the duration of life of stumps (ischolar_main and shoot cuttings) and the circumstances under which their life could be prolonged, certain experiments were carried out in the demonstration area of the Forest Research Institute, with some forest species. According to these experiments, the stumps of Syzygium cumini, Codrota toona, Datbergia sisoo and Bischofia javanica may be stored for over 3 weeks after they are prepared if they are kept moistened with water. If stored dry they remain good for 3 to 4 days only.- Interim Results of Comparative Thinning Investigation of Cryptomeria japonica

A study of soil temperatures and humidity was started in the Demonstration area of New Forest, F.R.I. in May I953 with a view to studying the differences in temperatures and humidity due to afforestation as compared to those in open. The interim results drawn from the data collected so far are given under "Conc1usion" at the end.- Succession of Ground Flora Species in the Forest Plantations of New Forest, Dehra Dun
