Objectives: To design a stable Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter which minimizes the magnitude response. Methods/Statistical Analysis: The problem is perceived as a problem of optimization with many objectives. An efficient algorithm, namely Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II), is used to solve it. To get assurance of stability, the poles of the filter are maintained inside the unit circle. Findings: As results show, the algorithm is well suited for the problem. Especially, it is very easy to design stable Low Pass (LP) and High Pass (HP) filters using this algorithm. Band Pass (BP) and Band Stop (BS) filters can also be designed by this algorithm, but sometimes it takes large number of iterations to converge. However, in offline applications, time is not an issue. Application/Improvement: The algorithm is an improvement over other researchers’ works which only minimize the magnitude response error treating the problem as a single objective one.
