Objectives: Smart city represents enhancement of today’s cities by providing sustainable growth through strategical exploitation of smart factors. It comprises of a network of heterogeneous interconnected things behaving as complex ecosystems. Methods: For implementation of smart city applications, for instance smart Street Lights (SLs), Internet-of- Things (IoT) stands as a potential solution in which different IoT systems equipped with sensors and actuators co-exist in a cooperative manner. IoT solves the problems associated with the current conventional SL systems including timing, maintenance and connectivity issues. Findings: This paper is focused to study the developments in the domain of IoT-based smart SLs. It highlights various contributions in this regard targeted at making SLs energy-efficient and intelligent by integrating additional capabilities of sensing, control and communication. Application/Improvement: This study provides a wide knowledge of the techniques to implement smart SL concept aiming to enhance energy efficiency while saving cost.
