An experimental methodology is presented in this paper to assess the migration of iodide ion (non-radioactive) through saturated Bentonite:Sand (B:S)backfill. Column tests were conducted to study the advective diffusion of iodide ion through different proportions of B:S specimen simulating the stress conditions of Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) for Low level radioactive waste. The diffusion coefficient of iodide ion was found to be in the range of 1.25~4.70×10-10m2/sec with steady state hydraulic conductivity 3.31×10-11m/sec. These results suggest centrifuge modeling of iodide migration through B:S to verify self weight stress similitude between prototype and model. Such studies are useful in designing the backfill barrier for NSDF.
