Fungi Associated with Cowpea Seed Discolouration and Abnormalities in U.P. State of India

Cowpea (vigna anguiculata) is one of the major protein rich crops of the country. It is used primarily as a pulse as well as a vegetable crop for human consumption. Seeds of this important crop are known to be attacked by different pathogens which often take a heavy toll of the crop. Seed samples of cowpea showing different forms of discolouration and abnormalities were screened for associated fungi. Large number of fungi such as Fusarium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Curvularia, Penicillium, Pythium, etc., were found associated with the seed samples showing different types of discolouration and abnormalities such as yellow spots, wrinkled and damaged seeds. The seed borne fungi isolated included both field and storage fungi. The mycoflora varies with the type of abnormality and extent of damage which shows that cowpea seeds with various types of abnormalities, discolouration and damage have the potential to cause seed deterioration in storage and prove to be phytopathogenic in the field.
