Intelligence and Affect as Predictors of Academic Performance Among Undergraduate Students

College students encounter numerous challenges in their life such as economic difficulties, academic engagements and inappropriate time management skills which may contribute to stress and impair their academic functioning. There are myriad of factors which are involved in the academic performance. The present study aimed to assess the effect of intelligence, positive affect and negative affect on the academic performance of undergraduate students. A total of 108 undergraduate students participated in this study consisting of 55 males and 53 females and their level of intelligence, positive affect and negative affect was assessed by using Raven s' Standard Progressive Matrices and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule respectively. There academic performance was assessed by obtaining their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Positive affect was found to be a significant predictor of the academic performance. There was a significant gender-difference in positive affect and academic performance of undergraduate students. Moreover, there was a positive relationship between intelligence and academic performance, positive affect and academic performance. Thus, positive affect is a significant predictor of academic performance.
