The Role of Exercise and Diet in Reducing Osteoporosis

Millions of people worldwide suffer from osteoporosis, a crippling ailment that poses a serious public health risk. According to Kanis et al. (2019), osteoporosis is a progressive skeletal illness characterised by poor bone density and structural degeneration, which increases fragility and fracture risk. Due to hormonal changes brought on by menopause, older persons are most affected, especially postmenopausal women. Diet and exercise are important factors in lowering the risk of osteoporosis. Exercises involving weight bearing boost bone density and strength, while resistance training further improves bone health by building more muscle. Exercises for balance and flexibility can assist those at risk for osteoporosis avoid falls. Healthy bones are supported by a balanced diet full of essential minerals like calcium and vitamin D. From a young age, including these lifestyle elements into daily activities can significantly lower the risk of osteoporosis and improve overall bone health.
